The Third Modeling With The Masters Workshop...

A testimonial by Scott G. Perry, NMRA member 110470

Two out of three for me! The Modeling With The Masters series is as addicting as...model railroading!  This time was just as much fun as the last, if not more.

This time I got into town early, and by chance got to have dinner with friends that I met at the previous MWTM.

Chuck swears that I was taller (i.e. fatter.). It was great catching up on what had happened at MWTM II.

This time we focused on freight cars. Although my high-side gondola did not come out as expected, it did make a nice RIP track addition. I was greatly surprised at how well my open-load model (see below) came out! Pete Moffet took us step-by-step through the construction and weathering phase. This one is a keeper!

We also constructed gondolas with great details, airbrushed, weathered, and got our fingers stuck together. We even took a turn at scratch-building a coal shed. I was actually surprised at how well you can do when you have an expert giving you a helping hand. It would take me months to learn all the tricks I learned in just a few days. Sorry I stole all of your S-scale lumber, Clark Kooning. Guess I should have built it right the first time, eh?

Modeling trains from dawn 'till dusk will make you work up an appetite, and I enjoy going out to eat with the crew. Even the NMRA headquarters staff came down to take a turn at modeling. Keeli and Lee are quite good, even though they have never built a model before! But I think I am still missing some tools from my toolbox....

It was great fun! The last night, after a great dinner at a local steak place, we got to come back to the hotel for one of my favorite things...a ride on Allen McClelland's legendary V&O railroad. His slides and story are nothing less than superb!

My recommendations...

  1. Digital cameras are a must!  We took tons of pictures.
  2. Plan to spend some time at the rail yard in Chattanooga on Sunday. George, Chuck and myself slipped over to the Norfolk Southern and did a little rail-fanning.
  3. When they offer you beef and call it bar-be-cue, throw it away.
  4. Don't miss it for the world!

GO FOR IT! You will have the time of your life!
